Preparation guide · Controls declared for cyber insurance

You have email MFA: how should you describe other access in a cyber-insurance enquiry?

The company enabled an extra confirmation for email sign-in. While preparing cyber insurance, someone simply says it has MFA. The accounts and services covered by that statement remain unclear. Describe the actual position with technical help rather than turning partial deployment into a universal control.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify the services and accounts covered by an answer.
  • Separate active measures, exceptions and implementation plans.
  • MFA neither proves risk acceptance nor eliminates every incident.

Context comes before a yes or no

CNCS organises MFA selection around organisational context, service categorisation and authentication mechanisms. It recommends considering different needs, including remote and privileged access. This technical guidance is not a universal condition of Portuguese insurance policies and does not establish that email deployment protects other services.

Ask the responsible person for a scope map

If a questionnaire asks about MFA, have the technical team identify the relevant groups, such as email, remote access and administrator accounts. Record the verified status and confirmation date. Do not fill technical gaps with measures intended for next month.

Fictional example: a business has MFA for employee email but is still establishing the position for administrator accounts. The manager separates confirmed from unconfirmed information and asks how to complete the form. She does not declare universal deployment merely to finish faster.

Make exceptions visible without disclosing secrets

Where a question covers all users or particular access, clarify that scope and how exceptions should be described. If a field lacks room, ask for the appropriate supplementary-note channel. Do not assume an infrequently used account falls outside the question.

Preparation requires scope, status and the verification owner's reference. Never copy passwords, temporary codes, recovery codes, keys or customer lists into an enquiry or public comment. Handle sensitive technical evidence only through an appropriate channel using necessary information.

Revisit the answer after configuration changes

Retain the questionnaire version and clarifications relied upon. If deployment progresses or a declared situation changes, request assessment of the required update. A planned improvement, implemented control and insurer-accepted amendment are separate events.

RMACHADO can help prepare a cyber quote with answers verified by responsible people. Required measures and the effect of declarations depend on the proposal and contract. This guide audits no system, certifies no compliance and guarantees neither attack prevention nor claim acceptance.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Read the MFA question's exact scope.
  • Verify services and accounts with technical staff.
  • Distinguish active, exceptional, unconfirmed and planned states.
  • Keep the version and update information appropriately.
