THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Identify what each amount does.
- Read excesses and exclusions.
- Distinguish reduction from reimbursement.
Distinguish the situations
The EU's Your Europe portal distinguishes included third-party liability from optional rental protection and recommends reading the terms governing vehicle damage.

Fictional example
Fictional example: a reservation shows an 800-euro deposit and a 1,200-euro excess. Inês does not conclude that her maximum exposure is 800 euros or that both amounts are always added together. She asks what the deposit secures, which damage attracts an excess and which exclusions remain. She also checks whether extra protection reduces the excess directly or works by reimbursing her later.
Put the distinction to work
Before accepting extras, identify the protection provider, the damage procedure and deposit release conditions. Record the vehicle's condition at collection and return without omitting observed damage. Use the motor insurance guide and ask RMACHADO GROUP to help clarify how your usual insurance relates to the particular rental agreement, keeping the two contracts and their responsibilities separate.
