Buildings and contents: two questions after a kitchen renovation

The kitchen has been renovated, but the insurance discussion stopped at “the home is worth more”. A useful review separates changes to the property from belongings bought for it. Two lists provide better starting information than one estimate intended to cover everything.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Separate building and contents values.
  • Clarify how incorporated items are classified.
  • Date each list and record the valuation basis.

Two values with different purposes

The Allianz guide links buildings to reconstruction cost and contents to replacement cost. They are distinct references, subject to the policy terms.

Start the review with two provisional columns: work on the property and household items. If you are unsure where fixed or movable equipment belongs, record the question for the intermediary rather than guessing.

One renovation, three types of evidence

Fictional example: Beatriz replaces the flooring, buys a fridge and keeps an older table. She saves the works estimate, the appliance invoice and a current photograph of the room. Each record answers a different question.

The estimate describes the work, the invoice identifies a purchase and the photograph provides context. None independently sets the correct sum insured or confirms cover. The final classification needs to follow the contract.

Look for double counting

A complete kitchen estimate may already include equipment that appears again on a separate list. Highlight the overlap before adding the totals. Do not simply delete a figure without understanding what it represents.

Record what the estimate excludes too. This exercise prepares a traceable description; it is not a substitute for a professional valuation. Ask for any further evidence or valuation rules needed for the review.

Review the description, then the proposal

Take both lists to a home insurance review through rmachado.group. Ask where buildings, contents and any specific limits appear. Keep the answer with the version of the proposal you are comparing.

Where the renovation is ongoing, explain the actual stage and intended dates. Proposed work and completed work should not be described as though they were the same situation. A clear starting description makes later differences easier to identify.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Separate works and belongings.
  • Flag items needing classification.
  • Check estimates for duplicate entries.
  • Keep the revised proposal version.
