At motor renewal, compare the insured value with the excess

The renewal notice arrives and the first instinct is to compare its price with last year’s. Add another reading: which insured value is shown, which cover does it concern and what excess applies? Comparison becomes clearer when each figure has an identified purpose.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Read insured value, cover and excess together.
  • Do not treat a sum insured as a guaranteed payment.
  • Separate proposed amendments from completed changes.

The amount and your share serve different purposes

Fidelidade’s own-damage information describes an excess deducted from an indemnity due. The insured value and excess therefore should not be treated as the same figure.

Copy the amounts from the previous and new proposals and retain their dates. If the excess uses a formula, copy it completely. Do not convert it into an amount without its calculation base and any applicable minimum.

Compare without predicting a claim

Fictional example: Leonor finds an €18,000 insured value in an older document and €16,500 at renewal. The stated excess remains €500. She records three points to check: the amount, adjustment basis and version of the conditions.

For an arithmetic exercise only, €500 is approximately 2.8% of €18,000 and 3% of €16,500. This does not turn a fixed excess into a percentage excess. It simply helps Leonor understand the relationship between the figures.

Ask for the basis behind the difference

Ask the intermediary which valuation basis produced the amount and where it appears in the proposal. If an alternative uses another basis, request its scope and requirements rather than assuming two products are equivalent.

Include cover and premium in the same comparison. A larger amount on one line does not independently establish that a product suits the circumstances better. The purpose is to understand differences before choosing.

Keep the answer with the correct version

If requesting an amendment, record its reference and wait for confirmation of the terms and effective date. Do not replace the saved document with your own note saying “changed” while only an intention exists.

Prepare a Motor request at rmachado.group using current information. Avoid posting registration numbers, policy records or documents in comments to request a comparison.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Collect dated versions.
  • Copy insured value and excess.
  • Request the valuation basis.
