A 2% excess: two per cent of what?

Two proposals display the same figure: 2%. Before treating them as equivalent, identify the missing calculation base. Applying one rate to different amounts produces different results. A paper exercise makes the question clearer without trying to predict the settlement of an actual claim.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify the calculation base first.
  • Separate excess, loss and cover limit.
  • Use one scenario when comparing proposals.

Read the clause before the headline

An excess is an amount that may remain payable by the insured under the agreed terms. The public Fidelidade example describes a fixed excess for own damage. It does not establish that every proposal uses that format.

For each proposal, copy the complete expression: fixed amount or percentage, calculation base, any minimum and relevant cover. Do not fill a missing sentence with a rule from another policy.

An entirely fictional calculation

Assume an insured value of €15,000 and eligible expenditure of €1,000. In one mathematical hypothesis, 2% of the insured value is €300. In another, 2% of the expenditure is €20. The rate matches; the multiplication does not.

Neither hypothesis is a commercial offer. A hypothetical €250 minimum in the second arrangement would change the calculation again. Arithmetic alone excludes other limits, terms and circumstances relevant to a real claim.

Reverse the comparison

Instead of asking only which excess is lower, put one scenario to both proposals. Ask for the relevant clause and an explanation of your share, assuming the event fell within the cover.

Fictional example: Marta receives two written answers. One specifies a fixed amount; the other refers to a percentage and minimum. Recording those three details makes the difference visible before she decides.

Take a precise question to the request

Keep the proposal page and its date. In the Motor request at rmachado.group, explain the point you want clarified. Compare the premium and scope as well: an excess calculation does not replace reading the complete proposal.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Find the relevant cover.
  • Copy the whole formula.
  • Check the base and minimum.
  • Request one matching example.
