Old and new vehicle damage: how should the report distinguish them?

Two scratches on the same panel do not necessarily have the same cause. When reporting an accident, identify damage associated with the event and any previous damage you know about. An accurate account avoids mixing different occurrences into one repair request.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify known previous damage.
  • Locate the recent damage.
  • State uncertainty clearly.

The key distinction

Lusitania mentions inspections when arranging certain motor products. Earlier records can help establish vehicle condition without deciding cover for a new claim.

A decision in practice

Fictional example: Rui's bumper already had a mark before a recent collision. He identifies that mark in a photograph and describes the area affected by the new contact. If he cannot distinguish some of the damage, he says so and leaves assessment to the expert.

The next step

Use available dates and photographs without altering files to hide older marks. Ask the repairer for a quotation that explains the proposed work and the claim handler for clarification of the assessment. Replacing one component may physically resolve several defects, but that does not make them all part of the same compensation claim. Preserve the distinction between established facts and uncertainty.

Read the motor insurance guide and ask RMACHADO GROUP to help assess this specific question against the documents applicable to your situation in Portugal.
