Solar panel broken during repairs: is breakage cover enough?

Sofia Lobo plans repairs to her home’s solar installation and finds “breakage or falling” in the insurance documents. In this fictional story, she asks Clara Mota whether that settles a panel broken during the work. The answer also depends on the circumstances in which the damage occurs.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Accidental breakage can fall outside cover during specified work.
  • Describe the intervention as well as identifying the panels.
  • Home insurance and the contractor’s responsibility need separate enquiries.

Read the event alongside the stage of the work

The Generali Casa terms, model 465.031 of July 2025, provide a solar or photovoltaic panel breakage/fall condition for installations used by the insured. It excludes damage during assembly, disassembly and repair; during construction, repair, cleaning or alteration work at the insured location; and from lack of equipment maintenance. This is an identified contractual example, not a rule for every policy.

Accordingly, “accidental” does not remove the example’s exclusion. Sofia asks the complete question: what would be considered if the panel broke while being repaired? The panels’ location and recorded sum insured still matter, but they do not by themselves answer that circumstance.

Describe the work before relying on protection

Clara suggests a short note stating the purpose of the intervention, expected dates and who will carry it out. Separate maintenance, cleaning, component replacement and panel movement according to the technical estimate. If disassembly is still uncertain, mark it as outstanding rather than choosing a more favourable description.

The example’s wording also mentions work at the insured location, rather than only work on the panel itself. Include roof repairs or other simultaneous building work in the enquiry. Ask for an answer connecting the operations described with your own policy terms and explaining whether another arrangement or amendment is needed before work starts. Sending a request is not an accepted amendment.

The contractor’s responsibility is a separate assessment

Asking about home insurance does not replace checking the agreement and documents of the contractor doing the work. Sofia can ask the contractor to identify the business and provide information about the insurance presented for the planned operations. A certificate alone does not establish that every panel loss is covered or that the contractor is responsible for it.

If damage occurs, record the sequence, the operation underway and available evidence without deciding fault yourself. Follow the reporting procedure indicated in the relevant contracts. Do not arrange unsafe work to obtain photographs or preserve a part; safety and technical instructions come first.

A useful answer identifies the operation and contract

Clara helps Sofia distinguish three documents: the work estimate, home-policy information and the answer to the specific enquiry. Keep versions and dates. A marketing phrase about protected panels does not replace reading the cover and exclusions applicable to the intervention actually planned.

For damage that has already occurred, use RMACHADO’s Support and claims route. To prepare future protection, select Home multirisk insurance under “Request a quote” and mention the panels and planned work. The request confirms neither intervention cover nor acceptance of an amendment. The product used as an example is not being recommended.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Describe the operations and simultaneous building work, with expected dates.
  • Check cover and exclusions in the version applicable to the policy.
  • Clarify the home policy and contractor documentation separately.
  • Keep the specific answer and distinguish a request from an accepted amendment.
