Practical guide · People insured under family liability

Your child studies in another city: are they still included in family liability insurance?

A child spends weekdays in a room near university and returns home during holidays. The family still considers them part of the household, but that description alone does not confirm who is insured under the liability policy.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • The contractual insured-person definition is the starting point.
  • Describe residence and study arrangements without assuming inclusion or exclusion.
  • Also check the context of a loss and territorial scope.

The product mentions a household; the contract defines it

Allianz Vida Privada information note 061, dated October 2023, refers to damage caused by the insured and their household. That presentation does not replace reading the contractual definition of the people included.

As a separate example, Allianz Casa 2050 conditions, edition 02/2022_1, link Insured Persons to specified relatives living together in a common household economy. That is wording from a home product with private-life liability, not a universal family-liability definition.

Explain the actual change

Describe whether the move is temporary for study, which residence is maintained and how life is organised between both places. Do not treat tax-household status, kinship or regular visits as an insurance certificate.

Request the applicable clause and clarification of any specific terms for students away from home. Moving does not automatically establish exclusion; equally, it should not be ignored because an address on a document has not changed.

An insured person and an insured situation are separate questions

After establishing who meets the definition, describe the context you want to clarify. Damage during a private gathering, paid activity and property provided for use can raise different questions under one policy.

Fictional example: a student asks whether they remain included and whether an item in the rented room is protected. A positive answer to the first question does not settle the second. Separate the person's inclusion, cause and nature of the affected property.

Keep a response tied to the right policy

Identify the policy and document version addressed by the answer. If an amendment is needed, distinguish the request, acceptance and effective date. A quotation for another product does not change existing insurance.

Start a RMACHADO family-liability review by explaining the changed routine. Household names, addresses and documents belong in the appropriate channel. The checklist aims to obtain clear confirmation rather than decide an individual situation by analogy.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Obtain insured-person and household definitions.
  • Describe residence and study arrangements.
  • Request the clause for a student living away.
  • Separate the person, context and affected property.
  • Keep confirmation and accepted amendment dates.
