Critical illness in life insurance: a lump sum or the cost of treatment?

One proposal mentions critical illness; another mentions healthcare expenses. Before comparing amounts, establish what triggers the benefit and how it is calculated. A lump sum linked to a contractually defined diagnosis answers a different question from reimbursement of a medical bill.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • A disease name does not replace its contractual definition.
  • Compare an event-based sum with reimbursable expenses.
  • Ask what happens to other benefits after payment.

A contractual example makes the distinction visible

Allianz Vida Segura's August 2024 terms provide a critical-illness sum to the insured person for a diagnosis meeting the definitions. They specify a maximum age, non-accumulation with death and disability sums, and termination following that payment. This is one product example, not a universal rule.

Put two questions beside the advertised amount

In the first column, record the trigger: which definition must be met and what documentary assessment is required? In the second, identify the benefit: a lump sum, eligible expenses or a service. Do not transfer an answer between columns simply because both use health-related words.

Diagnosis and care belong with clinical professionals. For insurance comparison, ask for the relevant clause and assessment procedure rather than trying to diagnose a situation from a commercial list.

A EUR 20,000 sum is not a EUR 20,000 bill

Fictional exercise: a proposal shows EUR 20,000 for a specified event while the family budgets EUR 3,000 of expenses. These figures have different bases. The former requires checking the event and terms; the latter is only an expense estimate. Neither establishes that payment has been approved.

For the household budget, separate treatment, transport, potential lost income and help at home. This identifies needs. Do not turn the total into an indemnity forecast or commit to spending in anticipation of receiving the sum.

Compare the position after a potential payment too

Ask about continuation of the contract, the relationship with the death benefit and the payment recipient. A proposal may appear broader if you add amounts that cannot accumulate. Keep an explanation for the specific scenario instead of totalling every figure in the table.

When requesting a quote from RMACHADO, explain whether you need liquidity following a defined event, help with healthcare expenses or income protection. That purpose helps compare different functions without promising acceptance, an eligible diagnosis or cover.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation
