Practical guide · Two people in mortgage life insurance

Mortgage life cover for two people: does the other's insurance continue after a disability payment?

Rui Lobo reviews mortgage protection with Clara Mota. In this fictional story, he wants to understand what would happen to Sofia's insurance if a disability lump sum were paid for Rui. Each person's share of the insured sum does not by itself answer whether the contract continues after that benefit.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Two insured people may share one contract.
  • The share of the insured sum does not establish a second independent protection.
  • The effect of a payment on the other person must be read in the actual policy.

Start by counting contracts, rather than names

The VICTORIA Vida Crédito Habitação pre-contractual note dated 1 October 2025 describes individual life insurance that may cover two lives. In this example, 'individual' does not necessarily mean a separate policy for each person.

Rui identifies the contract reference and where the insured people are listed. Clara asks him not to treat two names, two signatures or two sum-insured entries as proof of two independent contracts. If there are separate policies, each must be read under its own terms, without automatically transferring one contract's effect to the other.

One example ends the contract after one person's disability payment

In the VICTORIA Vida Crédito Habitação general conditions, CREDH version dated 24 October 2025, clause 2(8) provides for a two-life contract to end on the date the disability lump sum for one insured person is paid. The provision concerns the contract, rather than only that person's benefit.

Under that wording, another future benefit for the other person should not automatically be counted on under the same contract. This is a specific example, subject to the policy and remaining terms, without a product recommendation. It does not determine that Rui has a covered disability or would receive any payment.

The insured share and continuation are different questions

Clara separates two entries in the comparison. The first asks what benefit is provided for each person following a covered event. The second records the payment's effect on the contract covering the other person. Knowing a percentage does not automatically fill the second entry.

Rui asks for an answer about the structure actually under review: after the payment described, which contract and benefits would remain for Sofia, if any? He keeps the clause supporting the answer. He does not add hypothetical benefits for two people as though they would always remain available in sequence.

After a benefit, confirm the protection that remains

If a payment has already occurred, ask for the policy's status and the document confirming its effect, rather than relying on an earlier copy listing both names. The insurer's confirmation and the bank's information about the loan should be identified separately; neither substitutes for the other.

When preparing future protection, Rui describes the family commitments he wants considered again. Clara does not recommend keeping, separating or buying policies. To clarify an existing contract, use policy support; for a future comparison, select Life in RMACHADO's 'Request a quote'. The request neither extends insurance nor guarantees acceptance.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify how many contracts exist and who is insured under each.
  • Check each person's benefit and the payment's effect on the contract.
  • Find the continuation or termination rule applying to the other person.
  • Keep confirmation of policy status and separate the review of future protection.
