Damage to a car and its garage: are they the same insured property?

Garage can mean the constructed space or the belongings inside it. Do not place every damaged item under the building's insured amount. First identify the property and who owns it.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Separate building, vehicle and belongings.
  • Identify their owners.
  • Keep repair quotations distinct.

The key distinction

The Allianz Casa wording consulted treats vehicles kept in a garage within a specific definition. This example requires reading the conditions and identifying insured property.

A decision in practice

Fictional example: an event damages a garage door, a car and a bicycle. The administrator describes the door and common area; owners identify their respective belongings. The lists share an incident reference without confusing ownership, value or policy. Nobody adds the insured limits of two policies to predict a payment.

The next step

Ask which claims need to be opened and how to disclose other relevant insurance. Separate the building quotation from the vehicle repair quotation. Mark an uncertain cause as uncertain. A locked garage does not automatically make everything inside it part of the building, and having motor insurance does not remove the need to check the particular benefit invoked.

Read the relevant insurance guide and ask RMACHADO GROUP to help assess this specific question against the documents applicable to your situation in Portugal.
