Contents in another home for a few weeks: is that the same as putting them in storage?

Sofia Lobo is planning a temporary stay and intends to take some belongings while leaving others in storage. She calls both operations a temporary move. In this fictional story, Clara Mota shows her why the destination and purpose of the transfer can lead to different answers.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Temporary residence and a storage location are not equivalent under the example clause.
  • The period, territory, destination characteristics and specified risks form part of the assessment.
  • A published clause does not prove that the cover is included in your policy.

Cover linked to the place where you temporarily live

In the Generali Tranquilidade example, Mod. 465.031 of July 2025, the Mudança Temporária condition requires residence at the destination, in Portugal, with characteristics identical to the insured location. The stated maximum period is 60 days. The answer depends on the cover purchased.

Sofia’s useful question becomes: will I live at this location with these belongings, for how long and in what conditions? Saying only that the objects will be away for a few weeks omits how the destination will be used. Clara does not classify a home from a photograph or assume that two homes have identical characteristics; she prepares that information for assessment.

Storage is expressly treated separately

That condition excludes objects transferred for storage, among other purposes. Brief storage does not itself meet the requirement to reside at the destination. Any other cover arranged requires its own examination.

Fictional exercise: Sofia expects to stay in another home for four weeks, taking clothes and books, and to put some boxes in a storage space. Clara creates two lines in the enquiry, one for each destination and purpose. Any answer about the objects accompanying the stay should not be copied across to the boxes in storage. The exercise does not confirm that any of these belongings are insured.

Leaving home does not provide cover against every type of damage

The condition lists covered risks and retains applicable general exclusions. The heading temporary move should not be interpreted as protection against every loss during the journey.

Ask a separate question if you need protection for packing, transport or unloading. Identify the actual belongings too: an answer about clothes does not automatically resolve the position of jewellery or equipment. The purpose of this reading is to understand the extension’s scope, rather than turn its heading into protection for everything taken out of the home.

Compare what is agreed for each destination

Before relying on an extension, ask the proposal to identify the cover, belongings and locations considered, the period, limits, excesses and exclusions. Keep the documents actually considered in the answer. If the stay might be extended, explain that possibility in the initial enquiry.

To compare future protection, select MR Habitação in Request a quote on the RMACHADO website and describe the stay separately from the storage of belongings. For clarification of a policy you already hold, use policy support. Clara leaves Sofia a concrete task: keep both answers with the correct documents, without treating an enquiry as acceptance of the risk.
