THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Identify the procedure and its code.
- Separate the quotation components.
- Check limits and personal charges.
The key distinction
The Multicare wording consulted distinguishes outpatient care from hospital surgery without an overnight stay. This is a contractual example, not a rule for every policy.

A decision in practice
Fictional example: Leonor receives a quotation for a morning procedure with an afternoon discharge. She separates the procedure, theatre, anaesthesia and materials. She asks which code the provider submitted and whether the insurer's response relates to the complete quotation. She does not treat the absence of an overnight stay as confirmation of cover.
The next step
Place the quotation beside the insurer's response. Identify the benefit limit used, the amount payable personally and any unanswered items. If the procedure changes, request a fresh assessment before relying on the previous calculation. Approval for one procedure should not be read as approval for every service mentioned during a conversation.
Read the health insurance guide and ask RMACHADO GROUP to help assess this specific question against the documents applicable to your situation in Portugal.
