Practical guide · Prostheses and surgical estimates

Does a prosthesis used in surgery always have the Prostheses and Orthoses benefit limit?

Tiago Faria is comparing a health insurance proposal and notices a limit in a line called Prostheses and Orthoses. He assumes that this must be the maximum for a prosthesis used during surgery. In this fictional story, Clara Mota checks the description of hospital expenses before making that connection.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • In the wording examined, Hospitalisation mentions osteosynthesis material and surgical prostheses.
  • The Prostheses and Orthoses line alone does not establish the limit for all surgical material.
  • Each estimated expense needs to be matched with the inclusion, exclusions and individual policy terms.

Look for the inclusion within the hospital benefit itself

In Multicare CG28, D0028 of September 2026, Hospitalisation special condition CE001 includes osteosynthesis material and surgical prostheses in point 1.1(e). This inclusion sits within cover for procedures requiring the specific facilities and services of a hospital environment and is subject to the terms and limits in the policy schedule or certificate.

There is therefore a specific reference within Hospitalisation; the starting point should not be to assign the limit of another line to every item called a prosthesis. Tiago’s question changes: under which benefit and limits would the actual expense identified in the estimate be assessed? Its mention in the general wording does not confirm acceptance of a device or procedure.

Prostheses and Orthoses is a different condition with its own rules

CE015 in the same document deals with prescribed prostheses or orthoses under its stated terms and has its own exclusions and methods of use. It is not presented as the only provision that can mention prostheses in the policy. The current product page also lists this benefit separately from Hospitalisation.

Compare the two headings without merging them or adding their limits on your own initiative. An answer about a standalone purchase should not be transferred to a device used during surgery, or vice versa, without checking its classification under the policy. This does not create a universal split between everything internal and everything external: the actual wording and procedure still matter.

An inclusion does not remove the need to read exclusions

Clause 4(26) of the same general conditions excludes transplants and implants and their consequences unless expressly agreed otherwise in the policy. Clause 1 states that special conditions prevail over general conditions and that the policy schedule prevails over both. This reading therefore requires the specific inclusion, exclusions and individual agreement to be considered together.

Clara does not resolve the question by counting appearances of the word prosthesis or by applying only an exclusion found in a search. She asks for an answer identifying the provision applicable to the expense and explaining how it is treated. This guide does not clinically classify material as an implant, interpret Tiago’s individual policy or conclude that every implant is covered.

Ask for an answer that follows the estimate’s individual lines

As preparation, separate professional fees, operating theatre charges and material identified by the provider. For the material line, ask which benefit and limit are being considered and what you would be expected to pay. Under the example CE001, in-network use requires prior authorisation; a clinic’s name in the network does not replace assessment of the expense. Do not change a device or clinical plan to fit a financial category.

For an existing policy, clarify the estimate through policy support and keep the answer with the version assessed. To compare future protection, request a Health insurance quote through Request a quote on the RMACHADO website and explain that you wish to clarify material and prostheses used in surgery. Send clinical information only through the designated private channel. A commercial enquiry does not authorise the procedure or confirm payment for planned treatment.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify the material in the estimate without classifying it yourself.
  • Locate the Hospitalisation inclusion and any Prostheses and Orthoses benefit.
  • Ask for the special, general and individual terms to be read together.
  • Confirm the benefit, limit, authorisation and personal cost for each expense.
