Renting an Erasmus room: does liability insurance include the landlord’s belongings?

Before departure, a student checks medical expenses and baggage but may leave damage to furniture in a rented room unresolved. Liability cover on a proposal does not answer automatically. Ask specifically about the accommodation, the landlord’s belongings and exclusions for rented items or property provided for use.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • The landlord’s property requires explicit confirmation even when liability is listed.
  • A tenancy deposit is not an insurance benefit.
  • Compare a commercial description with the applicable conditions and extensions.

Why the summary is not enough

The current Fidelidade Viagem Erasmus page refers to damage to third parties. In the May 2024 AP135 conditions consulted, Viagem 2 non-contractual liability excludes objects entrusted to the insured, rented or provided for use or transport. These points require checking the conditions and any extensions in the actual proposal rather than assuming accommodation belongings are protected.

Identify the item before describing the loss

In your request, distinguish the building, the landlord’s furniture and appliances, your belongings and other students’ property. Explain whether you rent a room, share a house or stay in university accommodation. Accommodation can describe different relationships and different items.

Fictional example: a student damages a desk supplied with the room and also breaks their own computer. The first question concerns another person’s item used as part of the accommodation; the second concerns personal property. They are not necessarily assessed under the same benefit even if the same event caused both.

Ask for the applicable provision

Provide an adequate description of the use and request the benefit, exclusions and any extension addressing rented or entrusted property. Confirm the country, length of stay and insured person. A general statement about third parties should not replace a written answer to the specific situation.

Record the tenancy deposit separately from insurance benefits. A deduction from the deposit or a landlord’s demand does not establish that an insurer must pay. If tenancy responsibility is disputed, retain communications and obtain appropriate clarification of the rental contract and destination’s law.

Prepare an inventory and protect privacy

Before moving in, organise an inventory and record the condition of items with the landlord, using photographs where appropriate. Retain the contract and evidence privately. Do not publish identification documents, a full address or photographs of fellow students to request opinions about damage.

You can request a quotation from RMACHADO for the study stay with the accommodation question explicitly included. Ask for applicable documents before deciding. This guide does not assert that any product covers an existing loss or replace examination of the individual conditions and any purchased extension.
