THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Leaving employment requires reading the enrolment procedure and its effects.
- Ending the whole policy and excluding one person are different situations.
- The continuation addressed by Article 85 depends on the contract’s conditions.
Start with your enrolment, not the whole team’s policy
Article 83 of the Insurance Contract Legal Framework allows exclusion from group insurance when the relationship with the policyholder ends. The contract must specify the procedure and when exclusion takes effect. Without that reading, the last working day should not be treated as a definitive answer on cover.
Tiago asks the employer for his enrolment reference and the information applicable to departure. Clara distinguishes a previously received certificate from confirmation of the present position. If family members also appear in benefit-related documents, Tiago includes that identification in the question without assuming the same answer for everyone.
Ending the group contract is another issue
Article 84 concerns termination of the group contract itself and communication that cover ends. It provides for 30 days’ notice for revocation or termination by notice. That provision should not, by association alone, become a universal 30-day insured period after any employee leaves.
Ask the response to identify whether it concerns your exclusion, changes to terms or the end of the whole policy. A team communication may address a different issue from Tiago’s enrolment. Retain the complete response and the reference of the document to which it relates.
Continuation depends on the contract’s provisions
Article 85 provides for continuation of cover after exclusion or termination of a group contract when and under the conditions set out in that contract. It does not establish automatic conversion to any individual policy or show that future premium, sum insured or terms will be identical.
Clara suggests three questions: is continuation available for this situation, what step is required and by when must it be exercised? Tiago retains contact details outside the work email he may lose access to. If considering different individual protection, he requests its own proposal without treating it as accepted.
Compare confirmed dates before relying on the new benefit
Tiago asks the new employer what Life protection is actually provided, who will be included and when documentation can be obtained. He places that response beside the former enrolment’s information. A job advertisement or benefits presentation does not replace contractual confirmation.
Use policy support to assist reading an existing contract. To compare future protection, select Life under Request a quote on the RMACHADO website. A new proposal does not itself maintain the old enrolment, remove a gap or guarantee acceptance. Health documents belong only in the indicated private channel.
