THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- A prescription alone does not confirm reimbursement by insurance.
- Distinguish the medicine’s price from the cost actually borne by the patient.
- Identify the applicable cover and response for that expense, without assuming full payment.
Start with the invoice’s separate lines
Article 8 of the pharmacy framework requires information about retail price, reference price where applicable, the State’s contribution percentage and costs borne by the State and patient. Portaria 51/2024 specifies how this information is presented on the invoice or combined invoice and receipt.
Clara asks D. Graça to find the line showing her own cost. The retail price and money actually paid should not be copied as if they were the same figure. A public contribution does not constitute a response from the private insurer either.

Medicines cover has its own conditions
Contract example: the August 2025 Médis individual conditions, when Medicines cover is contracted, refer to medicines eligible for SNS contribution and the unfinanced portion. They require a prescription for a covered clinical situation and exclude, among other items, over-the-counter medicines, vaccines and supplements. Limits and charges depend on the policy schedule.
This example helps identify the question; it neither recommends the product nor confirms availability under a new option or inclusion in D. Graça’s policy. She looks for the cover’s name in her contract and seeks clarification about the particular purchase. She does not turn a prescription into an acceptance or payment decision.
Separate the requested amount from evidence of purchase
When preparing the request, keep the medicine’s lines, date, amounts and contribution information legible. Do not provide only a card-payment slip if it cannot link the amount to the purchase. Ask the pharmacy to correct a document error; do not alter an image to make it fit a limit.
As an organising method, Clara suggests three columns: document received, unresolved question and insurer’s response. D. Graça does not present the State-funded share as if she paid it herself. She retains the documents and uses the indicated private channel for the prescription and other necessary information, without posting them in comments.

A useful response identifies the expense and cover
Ask the explanation to distinguish whether cover is included, the purchase’s eligibility, the amount considered and any cost remaining with you. If the response depends on missing information, establish what is needed. An explanation about consultations or inpatient treatment may be correct without answering the pharmacy-purchase question.
For an expense under an existing policy, use policy support. To compare future protection, select Health under Request a quote on the RMACHADO website. A new proposal does not automatically fund earlier purchases. This guide organises insurance questions; decisions on selecting and using medicines belong with clinical and pharmacy care.
KEEP THESE QUESTIONS
Your checklist for the next conversation
- Locate the retail price, contribution and cost borne by the patient.
- Check the actual contracted cover and purchase being assessed.
- Retain legible documents without duplicating the State-funded amount.
- Obtain a specific answer through the appropriate private channel.
