Practical guide · Everyday insurance in Portugal

The clinic is in the network: what about your appointment?

Before requesting health insurance in Portugal, identify where and how you hope to use it. A hospital name on a list does not settle every condition of a particular appointment. Prepare a specific check covering the site, practitioner or specialty, service and access arrangement. This guide helps organise quotation questions; it does not assess clinical circumstances or confirm that a treatment will be covered.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify the site and specialty.
  • Check the product option and directory.
  • Clarify the service and access arrangement.

Make the question specific to the appointment

Fictional example: Leonor wants an appointment near her workplace. Instead of asking only whether the clinic accepts insurance, she identifies the insurer or option being considered and the specialty. She asks how that particular appointment would be booked and billed. There is no need to post symptoms or upload test results publicly. This preparation separates a preferred location from an unconfirmed contractual condition. An answer concerning another site or a similarly named product does not settle her question.

Check the directory and the provider

ASISA’s FAQs direct customers to its provider network and to the relevant specialty provider for booking, with a qualification for services requiring prior authorisation. That is this insurer’s procedure, not a universal rule for every policy. For the actual quotation, establish which directory applies and when the information was checked. Then ask the provider how the booking would be handled. If the answers differ, seek clarification before assuming that the appointment uses the agreed network arrangement.

Ask what the quoted charge includes

Add the expected personal charge and what it includes to your checklist. Clarify a consultation, test and additional procedure separately where relevant. Ask about any authorisation, limit, waiting period or exclusion in the proposed terms. Do not turn an estimate into a promise of a final price. Keep the reference for the information and identify anything still unresolved. An available appointment in a booking calendar also does not demonstrate that insurance has been issued or that the service is eligible.

Use your preferences to prepare the request

Want to compare options against the providers you normally use? Read the health insurance guide below and request an assessment from RMACHADO GROUP, identifying the areas and specialties you want clarified. Any necessary clinical information belongs in the appropriate channel.
