Earthquake cover: what sum insured and excess does your home policy use?

During an apartment building's insurance review, someone asks whether it is protected against an earthquake. The answer should identify the contract, property and cover actually purchased. «We have multi-risk insurance» does not describe those elements.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Find the cover and evidence it was purchased.
  • Check units, common parts, building and contents within scope.
  • Read an excess percentage alongside its calculation base.

Find the specific guarantee

The reviewed public February 2022 Allianz Casa conditions address earthquake events in a separate special condition. This example helps locate a guarantee; it does not establish inclusion in your policy or universal terms.

Request the schedule identifying purchased covers and compare it with the guarantee definition and exclusions.

List property and contracts

Separate the collective policy and known individual policies for the meeting. Record the units, common parts and property identified in each and their insured amounts. Mark unresolved points instead of guessing.

Fictional example: the administrator has evidence concerning common parts and an owner supplies a unit policy. Without reading them, the two documents do not settle whether earthquake cover was purchased for each property group.

A percentage needs a base

Arithmetic-only example: if a proposal sets an excess at 5% of a EUR 200,000 sum insured, that example produces EUR 10,000. A fixed EUR 1,000 excess would be different. These numbers are not product terms or a commercial offer.

Ask whether the percentage applies to the sum insured, loss or another defined reference. Note any minimum and other limits. Do not automatically apply it to a repair estimate.

Keep confirmed answers

Record contract, version, guarantee, property, sum insured and excess in the minutes or supporting file as appropriate. Separate documentary confirmations from unanswered questions.

Request a quote from RMACHADO describing the property for consideration. Claim cover requires assessment of the terms and event; this guide does not anticipate it.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Find evidence of earthquake cover.
  • Identify property and building parts in each contract.
  • Check the sum insured and excess base.
  • Record replies and unresolved points before comparing.
