THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Separate direct damage from aesthetic continuity in a quotation.
- Mismatched tiles do not guarantee a complete refurbishment.
- Check the contracted cover, limit and scope of works being considered.
A cover with its own purpose
Allianz Casa's February 2022 terms describe aesthetic damage as repairs needed to preserve the aesthetic continuity and harmony of the building, insured unit or furniture following an insured event. This is a specific policy example, not an identical rule across insurers.
Check the version applicable to the policy. Finding the phrase in marketing material or looking at the building's total sum insured is not enough.

Separate a works quotation into three parts
Fictional example: following work in a bathroom, a quotation includes directly damaged pieces, replacement of intact finishes to achieve a matching appearance and new fittings selected by the owner. Identify each group rather than presenting one total as though all costs had the same cause.
Ask the contractor to describe existing materials, the proposed solution and the reason for each task. If matching material is difficult to obtain, record enquiries and available alternatives without stating that the insurer has already authorised them.
Clarify scope before ordering work
Ask whether the assessment concerns a wall, a room or another area, and which policy provision supports that boundary. Clarify the amount accepted and any work still under review. A discussion about uniformity should not become an unspoken assumption that the entire home will be renewed.
Keep safe overview and detail photographs, an itemised quote and the replies received. Explain urgent containment measures in the claim; discussing finishes does not require leaving a dangerous situation unresolved.
Review protection before the next project
When comparing insurance, ask for aesthetic damage to be considered specifically, including applicable limits and conditions. Identify whether the issue concerns a private unit or common areas: the person seeking a quotation and the relevant policy may differ.
For future protection, choose home insurance in your RMACHADO enquiry and describe the property and need. For an existing incident use the current policy's support process. An enquiry does not authorise works or confirm payment of the quotation.
