Policy reading exercise · Home insurance and capital after a claim

After a claim payment, is the home policy’s full sum insured still available?

D. Graça Antunes files claim payment documents and looks again at the sum insured on her policy. In this fictional story, Clara Mota asks whether that amount remains available on the same terms for the rest of the policy year. Completing repairs does not alone answer this.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • A contract may reduce the sum insured after a claim payment.
  • Repairing property does not confirm reinstatement of capital.
  • Request the available amount and any reinstatement terms.

A contractual illustration of reduction

Article 27 of MAPFRE Casa terms 34020241000 provides, unless otherwise agreed, for reduction by the indemnity amount until expiry, without premium refund. Reinstatement requires policyholder notification, insurer acceptance and additional premium. This illustrates one contract, not a rule for every policy.

A fictional calculation to explain the question

Consider only this arithmetic exercise: a sum insured of 10,000 euros and an indemnity of 2,000 euros. If reduction applies to that sum and no reinstatement occurs, the difference is 8,000 euros. These invented figures represent neither a home valuation, offer nor settlement of a subsequent claim.

Clara asks D. Graça to distinguish three records: the document setting the sum insured, the indemnity record and any confirmation of reinstatement. Finding the original figure in an old copy does not establish that previous use had no effect.

Repair, reinstatement and annual updating

A repair invoice records work on property. Reinstatement confirmation concerns insurance capital. A renewal notice addresses another contractual point in time. Organise these records by date and ask what each changes rather than treating them as equivalent.

To clarify available capital, identify the affected heading and the period until expiry. Ask about any conditions, acceptance, cost and effective date of reinstatement. Sending an enquiry or receiving a premium quotation does not itself establish that an amendment is in force.

Resolve the question before another loss

D. Graça need not predict the next event to seek clarification. Clara helps frame the question: what capital is available under this heading now, and is any post-payment amendment confirmed? Keep the response with the policy and claim records.

For an existing contract, use policy support. To assess future protection, select Home Multi-risk in Request a quotation. A new quotation neither reinstates capital nor changes the treatment of an earlier claim.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify the affected heading and policy period.
  • Check the indemnity’s effect on available capital.
  • Separate repair, reinstatement and renewal.
  • Keep acceptance and the effective date of any amendment.
