Hunting in the Azores: does a national hunting card replace the regional licence?

Do not rely solely on a licence used in mainland Portugal and the name of an insurance policy. The Azores have a regional regime with their own licensing and documentation rules. Before booking participation, identify the island, season and activity, and separately check hunting authorisation and contractual insurance protection.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • A national hunting card does not replace the applicable regional licence.
  • A regional licence concerns the specified island and hunting season.
  • Insurance, documents and hunting permission each require their own checks.

What regional licensing changes

Article 15 of Regional Legislative Decree 3/2018/A provides that regional hunting licences are valid for the island and season concerned. Article 16(2) requires holders of a national hunting card who wish to hunt in the Region to obtain regional licences.

Distinguish the hunting card, licence and insurance policy. An answer about the validity of one document does not validate the others. If the trip covers more than one island, show the itinerary to the competent services to clarify the applicable procedures.

Where insurance fits

Article 9 sets a minimum of €100,000 for the hunter’s third-party liability insurance, without prejudice to firearms and ammunition law. Article 8 includes proof of payment of the premium for legally required insurance among the necessary documents, and requires the hunter to carry applicable documentation.

That legal minimum is not an estimate of the greatest possible loss or proof that your policy covers the intended location, activity and period. Check the actual policy terms and current documents; this guide does not validate a policy or authorise a hunting outing.

Henrique separates travel plans from document checks

Fictional Bairro Seguro example: Henrique Vasconcelos plans a trip to the Azores and considers joining activities on two islands. As he already has hunting documents and insurance, he initially thinks he can take the same folder. Clara Mota asks him to prepare a line for each island, with the date, activity, regional document requiring clarification and policy reference.

Henrique has the resources to rearrange his trip but wants to avoid reservations based on assumed permission. A participant on a tighter budget would have less room to absorb a change. In either case, confirming the conditions first is more useful than expecting a correction on arrival.

Preparing the outing without confusing responsibilities

Check the licence appropriate to your situation with the island forestry services or RIAC, and consult the island’s current hunting calendar and restrictions. Give the intermediary the same location, activity and period to check the insurance. Do not assume an organiser’s registration confirmation replaces individual documents.

To review future protection, select RC Caçadores in “Request a quote” on the RMACHADO website. For documents relating to an existing policy, use Policy and claims support. Do not post identifiers, firearms documents or complete certificates in public comments.
