Practical guide · Everyday insurance in Portugal

After a death, how can you look for an unknown life policy?

When a family cannot find insurance documents, it helps to organise the search without immediately concluding that no contract exists. The first task is to locate reliable information. A policy's existence, the identity of its beneficiary and any payment due are separate questions requiring their own confirmation.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Start with the documents available.
  • Use the ASF's official search information.
  • Separate finding a policy from claiming a benefit.

An official information service is available

The ASF provides information about life insurance, personal accident insurance and capitalisation arrangements with beneficiaries on death. Its page explains eligibility to apply, the form and required documents. It also notes limitations in identifying some non-contributory group policies, so contacting the employer about possible insurance may be useful.

Organise clues without treating them as proof

Fictional example: Beatriz finds an old insurer reference among a relative's papers. She records the document's source and date but does not assume that the contract remained active. She collects known references in a list and identifies the organisations to contact. If another family member has already made an enquiry, she records its reference and status to avoid duplicate requests. She does not post personal documents in group chats while looking for answers. An uncertain clue remains labelled uncertain until it is checked.

Keep the search separate from the claim

When information about a contract arrives, ask the insurer for the next steps and documents needed for the particular situation. Locating a policy does not automatically establish entitlement to a benefit or its amount. Keep the complete reply and identify exactly what was confirmed. For missing documents, record the intended recipient and purpose before sending them. An organised file helps the family follow the process with less repetition at a time when there may already be many administrative tasks, conversations and responsibilities to manage.

Ask for help organising the route

Read the life insurance guide and ask RMACHADO GROUP for assistance organising references and contacts. The official search and the insurer's assessment perform different functions, each with its own evidence and next steps.
