Life insurance: does every cover end on the same date?

The date in a life insurance summary may not answer every question about how long protection lasts. Before filing the policy, make a small table: cover name, applicable limit and the document where you found it. This review helps clarify differences without guessing what they mean.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Read the terms of each cover separately.
  • Do not treat one cover's limit as the limit for everything.
  • Ask for a written explanation of dates you do not understand.

An example shows why it is worth asking

For Fidelidade’s Mortgage Life Insurance product, the official page consulted on 18 October 2026 lists protection up to age 81 for death, 75 for permanent disability affecting any profession or paid activity, and 70 for permanent disability affecting the insured occupation or a compatible activity. These are that product’s limits, subject to its policy terms, rather than a market-wide rule.

The useful question is simple: 'What are the limits of each cover in this proposal?' The answer should address the contract you are reviewing, rather than a phrase remembered from another solution.

Build a table you can consult again

Create a row for each cover and three columns: what the policy says, the limit or date identified and the question to clarify. Copy the names carefully so that similar labels do not become confused.

Fictional example: Inês puts 'death' in one row and 'disability' in another. Rui realises he had recorded just one date for everything. Instead of reaching a conclusion, they note the question for the intermediary.

Distinguishing entry age from termination age avoids another error: the former concerns starting a policy, while the latter concerns how long a cover may continue. Use separate columns and confirm what each limit means in your proposal.

Duration is not the only comparison

Once the dates are clear, record the sum insured being compared and ask for an explanation of the scope of cover. Two columns showing the same price do not replace those answers.

You do not need to interpret an abbreviation alone. Ask for its full name and an explanation supported by the proposal terms. If documents differ, identify the versions and request clarification.

Review the information when circumstances change

If you are reviewing an older policy or have received a new proposal, compare dated documents addressing the same circumstances. Write down how the objective you want considered has changed, without posting personal details on social media.

Keep replies to your questions with the table. In a future discussion, you can distinguish what was confirmed from what you were still asking about.

The next step is clarification, not assumption

Visit the Life Insurance guide on rmachado.group and make your request through the website. The table can help you prepare the discussion and ask concrete questions.

A quotation request does not confirm acceptance, cover or the start of insurance. Before relying on protection, ask for confirmation of the applicable terms and effective date.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • List each cover by its full name.
  • Identify limits and dates for each cover.
  • Record the sum insured being compared.
  • Note questions and differences between versions.
  • Keep written explanations.
  • Confirm the terms and effective start.
