Policy-reading guide · Life insurance and medical-assessment disagreement

Doctors disagree on a life claim: who chooses the third doctor and pays for the board?

Rui Lobo wants clarification of an assessment in his mortgage life-insurance claim. In this fictional story, he asks Clara Mota what happens if his appointed doctor and the insurer’s disagree about his state of health. Clara identifies the policy procedure without interpreting reports or deciding disability entitlement.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • The example procedure starts with disagreement between the parties’ appointed doctors.
  • Choosing the third doctor and failing to agree on that choice are distinct stages.
  • Clarify costs before treating the board as a service entirely paid for by insurance.

Identify the medical question in dispute

Clause 18(4) of Allianz Vida Crédito 1904–10/2026_01 provides a process for disagreement about health between the insured person’s appointed doctor and the insurer’s. It is a product example. It should not automatically be applied to any dispute about an exclusion, sum insured or charge.

Rui asks which assessment point is in dispute and keeps the reply in the confidential case file. Clara does not choose which medical opinion is correct. An incapacity percentage, a policy definition and disagreement between doctors should be identified for what they represent rather than turning one into an automatic decision on the others.

Choosing the third doctor comes before the fallback

Under these terms, the parties choose a third doctor by mutual agreement. If they cannot agree on that choice, a board in Lisbon is provided for: the insured person’s doctor, the insurer’s doctor and a specialist professor from the Lisbon Faculty of Medicine selected by agreement between the two doctors.

The practical distinction matters: failure to agree on the third doctor is different from the original clinical disagreement. Rui asks which stage is proposed, how appointments will be recorded and who coordinates contact. He does not arrange a board unilaterally assuming this satisfies the policy procedure.

Separate your doctor’s cost from the board’s cost

The same provision makes each party responsible for its own doctor’s fees and expenses and divides board expenses equally between them. It does not describe a board entirely free to the insured person. This allocation supplies neither a fee schedule nor reimbursement of all travel costs.

Before committing to expenditure, request written information about fees, additional examinations, travel and payment arrangements for what is proposed. Flag outstanding questions, including the initial third doctor’s costs. Do not answer those by analogy with the board’s allocation where the wording does not expressly settle them.

Keep the medical process and insurance decision identified

Ask how the result will feed into assessment of the claim and how you will receive a reasoned decision. This guide declares neither universal binding effect nor that this process is the only route for challenging the policy position. Obtain appropriate support if rights, costs or deadlines are disputed; contacting parties about a board should not be treated as automatically suspending case deadlines.

The official library lists this version from 29 October 2026. Check the version actually applying to your policy. For an existing incident, use Support and claims at RMACHADO without sending clinical reports in comments or the initial general contact. To compare future protection, select Life under “Request a quote” and ask about disagreement procedures and costs too. The request does not decide the earlier claim.
