Moving to another country: is worldwide scope enough to keep my mortgage life policy?

Sofia Lobo is preparing to move to another country while keeping a mortgage in Portugal. In this fictional story, she finds the words «worldwide» in her life insurance. Clara Mota helps distinguish where events may be covered from the conditions for keeping the policy while resident abroad.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Territorial scope and keeping a policy after moving residence are different questions.
  • The policy may require notice before the move.
  • Request an answer about policy continuity and the relevant documents.

Read two clauses, not just the word «worldwide»

In Allianz Vida Crédito terms 1904–10/2026_01, Clause 5 provides worldwide validity unless the particular conditions agree otherwise. Clause 23 separately addresses residence in another country: legal or tax requirements may affect keeping the policy or carrying out certain transactions. This is a policy example, not a rule for every insurer.

Sofia’s useful conclusion is that territorial wording alone does not settle a change of residence. Clara suggests a specific question: «After this move, can this policy remain in force on the same terms?» The answer must address the actual country and circumstances; this guide confirms neither continuity nor cover for an individual event.

Check whether notice must precede the move

Clause 23 in this example requires at least 14 days’ advance notification. If the move affects the ability to maintain the terms, it envisages changes or termination; for termination it states 30 days’ notice. These periods belong to the provision read and do not mean any move permits termination of any life policy.

Article 190 of the insurance-contract regime excludes life insurance from the general aggravation-of-risk regime in Articles 93 and 94. Do not replace analysis of this clause with the general rule about reporting an aggravation after learning of it. Request the basis applicable to the actual policy and change without presuming consequences of non-compliance.

Describe who is moving, where and when

As a preparation method, Sofia records the destination country, expected date and who is changing residence: policyholder, insured person or both. She distinguishes a temporary trip from a change of residence. If plans remain unsettled, she flags the uncertainty rather than presenting an estimated date as final.

She gathers the policy reference and identifies the terms forming part of her policy. The library consulted lists the October 2026 version from 29 October; publication does not establish that an earlier policy changed automatically. Tax or destination-country residence questions may need clarification from competent professionals or authorities.

Keep the answer about continuity and the mortgage guarantee

Ask whether the policy can continue, what information is missing and whether any change is proposed. If terms change, check the basis, effective date and issued document. Also confirm the documentation concerning the policy used as mortgage security with the bank; sending the insurer a message does not itself update the loan records.

For an existing policy, use RMACHADO’s policy support and describe the planned move. To compare future protection, select Life under “Request a quote”, explaining that you intend to live abroad and retain protection linked to a Portuguese mortgage. The request neither changes the policy nor guarantees acceptance for residents of a particular country. Clara helps Sofia obtain answers before relying on an assumption.
