Changing a life beneficiary: is the designation irrevocable?

Dr Marta Sequeira wants to review a beneficiary designation in a life policy payable on death. In this fictional story, Clara Mota first asks whether the right to revoke it has been waived. Updating a family intention and changing a policy clause are separate steps; writing another name in a personal note does not establish that the policy changed.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Locate the current beneficiary clause.
  • Check for irrevocability wording.
  • Ask who must participate and approve.

Read how the designation is described

For death benefits, the person who made the designation may change or revoke it unless they expressly waived that right (Article 199(1)). Paragraph 4 provides situations where an amendment by the policyholder requires the insured person’s agreement. Check the applicable documents.

A fictional family conversation

Marta finds a reference to an irrevocable beneficiary. Instead of treating an informal statement as sufficient, she asks which approvals and documents are needed. Clara helps organise the enquiry; she does not choose beneficiaries or confirm that the amendment is possible. Marta keeps third-party documents out of the family chat.

Separate request, receipt and confirmation

Prepare a question with the policy reference and the change you want considered. Ask who may request it, who else must be involved and how its effective date is confirmed. Retain the answer and, if issued, the updated contractual document. An acknowledgement of receipt should not be filed as a completed change. Where third-party rights are involved, obtain specific advice before signing or cancelling contracts.

Review the purpose without assuming an outcome

A life review should connect the purpose, sum insured and beneficiary clause; this article does not choose beneficiaries. On rmachado.group select Vida to request a review of capital and disability wording, noting that the beneficiary designation also needs clarification. A quotation or amendment remains subject to the relevant process and applicable terms.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Locate the current beneficiary clause.
  • Check whether the right to revoke was waived.
  • Ask which participants and approvals are required.
  • Separate receipt from completed amendment and retain effective confirmation.
