Monthly instalment and policy period: compare different dates

A payment notice shows one date while the policy describes a longer period. Before calling the insurance monthly, distinguish payment frequency from contract duration. Two calendar lines help you ask more precise questions.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Separate duration and payment.
  • Check every relevant date.
  • Clarify charges.

One line for duration, another for payments

Article 52 of Portugal’s insurance contract regime permits premium instalments by agreement. That provision does not itself turn the contract duration into a series of monthly contracts.

On the first line, identify the policy period and stated effective dates. On the second, record payment due dates from the documents. If a date has not been found, mark it unconfirmed rather than repeat the first debit date.

An example of a misleading label

Fictional example: Rui says he has monthly insurance because a payment appears each month. Inês asks for the document identifying the contract duration. They realise they were answering different questions.

They do not conclude they can stop paying to terminate the contract. They take separate questions to the intermediary about the period, charges, payment arrangement and procedures for a proposed change. A calendar organises the discussion; it does not cancel a policy.

Use an equivalent comparison basis

When reviewing a new quotation, confirm the period covered by its price, number of instalments and actual applicable charges. An annual calculation using incomplete information can conceal important differences.

Keep the answers with the relevant notice. A requested payment preference should not be confused with an accepted policy amendment. Visit the relevant branch on rmachado.group to prepare a request. Clarifying terms should precede decisions about payments or termination.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Separate duration and payment.
  • Check every relevant date.
  • Clarify charges.
  • Do not assume unrestricted cancellation.
