THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- The statutory minimum arrangement links the end of the loan and the insurance.
- Protection chosen to continue needs its legal basis and documents checked.
- Moving the mortgage to another bank is a different situation.
The rule has a defined scope
Under the minimum arrangement in Article 5 of Decree-Law 222/2009, except following a claim, insurance ends when the loan ends, including early repayment. Article 3(3) allows death protection after the loan; Article 6 provides for other contracts selected by signed declaration. Check the arrangement agreed.
A commercial expression such as “house insurance” does not settle Sofia's question. Clara asks her to identify the life insurance, policy and documents recording her choice. This guide does not determine an individual policy's termination or instruct any cancellation.
Repaying and transferring are different questions
Article 5(3) makes an exception for a change of lending regime or loan transfer with an express declaration that the same insurance will secure the new loan. Do not automatically apply the full-repayment rule to a change of bank.
When preparing the conversation, write down what happened: did you repay and end the loan, or do you now owe another institution? Gather the bank's confirmation and identify the date. If the documents describe different operations, ask for clarification before concluding how the insurance is affected.
Ask for confirmation of policy status and charges
Make a specific request to the insurer or intermediary: what is the policy's status, what effective date is recognised, and which documents confirm it? If charges continue, ask for their identification and an itemised explanation of any adjustments. This article does not calculate a refund.
Keeping confirmation separates a request that was sent from a change actually recorded. Avoid settling the question solely from a bank transaction. Personal documents should use the appropriate channel and should not be published in comments.
The protection objective may have changed
Sofia and Rui are no longer comparing only a debt. With two children, they want to identify again which commitments they intend to protect and for how long. Clara helps them describe that need without assuming they should keep, replace or buy insurance.
To compare life protection after the mortgage, choose Life through “Request a quote” or request an initial contact on the website. To clarify an existing policy's status, use the support area. A new quotation does not automatically preserve or alter the earlier protection.
KEEP THESE QUESTIONS
Your checklist for the next conversation
- Confirm whether the loan was fully repaid or transferred.
- Identify the life insurance arrangement and its supporting documents.
- Ask for policy status, the effective date and an explanation of charges.
- Reassess the family's objective before comparing future protection.
