Are the policy sum insured and a cover limit always the same?

Rui Lobo finds a sum insured on the quotation’s front page and a different limit in an internal table. In this fictional story, Clara Mota helps him give each figure a purpose: property, cover and period. The largest number does not automatically answer every expense.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify each heading.
  • Check units and periods.
  • Clarify how limits interact.

Give each figure a full label

Article 49 of Portugal’s insurance contract regime distinguishes the sum insured and allows other contractual conditions affecting the insurer’s payment. The largest number on a page should therefore not be read as the automatic answer to every expense.

Make one row for each situation requiring clarification. Record the cover name, figure, unit and page reference. If one limit applies per event and another per period, keep them separate until their relationship has been explained.

An exercise without a payment promise

Fictional reading example: a sheet shows 10,000 euros for a set of belongings and 200 euros for a particular expense. Rui assumes the 10,000 euros is available for that expense. Clara first asks which heading contains the 200 euros.

This is neither a quotation nor a calculated settlement. Its useful conclusion is that the figures are not interchangeable. A real assessment would require the insured property, event, terms, any excess and relevant documents.

Turn the difference into a question

Ask: “Does this figure limit this expense? Does it apply per event, per person or across the period?” Also ask how different limits interact rather than assume they add together.

Keep the answer with the quotation version. In a later comparison, use equivalent situations and periods; a higher column does not prove greater suitability. Visit the relevant branch on rmachado.group to prepare a request. Keep personal documents out of public comments seeking interpretations.
