THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- A minimum duration may apply only to a specific cause.
- A public power cut and a fridge fault require different readings.
- Do not invent times or delay safety measures to preserve evidence.
The eight-hour example has a specific condition
Fidelidade Casa’s April 2026 pre-contractual information includes a refrigerated-food provision for an unannounced, evidenced interruption of public electricity supply lasting at least eight hours. In that example, four hours do not meet that particular duration requirement.
This illustrates how to read a policy, not a duration shared by all insurers. Eight hours alone do not guarantee payment either: check the cover purchased, applicable conditions and limits.
Cut duration does not answer every cause
The same document separately addresses appliance breakdown, accidental refrigerant loss and interruption of the appliance’s power due to a covered insured event. Do not automatically apply the eight-hour requirement to every situation.
If the neighbour still had power and only Sofia’s fridge stopped, that observation does not establish a public supply interruption. Clara suggests describing what was actually observed and seeking the necessary technical clarification, without selecting a cause to fit a benefit.
Prepare a timeline that can be checked
As an editorial method, Sofia separates the last observation of normal operation, discovery of the problem and information received about restoration. If she was away and does not know when it started, she records an unknown start. Discovery time does not become the time the supply failed.
She preserves available supplier or network-operator notices and references unchanged. She asks for information identifying a public interruption, its duration and any advance notice. Another person’s account can guide a question but should not be presented as official confirmation.
Record food and the appliance separately
List affected food, quantities and actual evidence of value separately from fridge repair. Unless otherwise agreed, the example benefit excludes damage to the appliance itself; do not add its repair as though it were spoiled food.
Follow competent food-safety guidance and the process instructions. Do not delay necessary safety measures to retain evidence. Document what is safe to record without posting images of people or address details.
Take the right question to support or a quotation
For an occurrence, use policy support to clarify the cause, documents and contractual assessment. A food list and estimate are not acceptance of the loss. Do not invent a duration to fill missing information.
To review future home protection, request a Home quotation and say you want to compare refrigerated-food cover and power-failure conditions. The request assesses a future need; it does not create protection for an already known loss.
KEEP THESE QUESTIONS
Your checklist for the next conversation
- Identify the cause and wording before applying a number of hours.
- Record observations, received information and unknown times separately.
- Separate food, appliance and evidence while respecting safety.
- Use support for an occurrence and a quotation for future needs.
