I have cover through my professional body: is the certificate enough to compare protection?

A professional receives an insurance certificate through a professional body or association and needs to present it to a client. Gather the group-policy terms and compare them with the actual services. The issuing body's name does not answer every question.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Read the certificate together with policy terms.
  • Check year, insured party and professional acts.
  • A stated limit alone does not prove suitability for every project.

A current documentation example

OET's page updated on 16 October 2026 identifies a base policy for 2026, provides general, particular and special terms, and describes higher-limit options. These separate documents illustrate why it is useful to look beyond a certificate.

This concerns that professional group and policy year. It establishes neither identical rules for another body nor any individual's inclusion.

Match four identifiers

Our suggested reading record contains four fields: person or entity providing the service, activity performed, document year and policy reference. Compare it with the client contract and certificate.

Fictional example: an engineer receives a certificate request for services invoiced by their company. Rather than assuming a personal certificate settles the company's position, they identify the contracting entity and ask how the terms treat it. The enquiry does not establish either inclusion or exclusion.

Compare client requirements with actual clauses

Record the limit requested by the client, documented limit, excess, period and territory separately. If a field is absent from the certificate, find it in the terms or request clarification. Identify professional acts you cannot relate to the wording.

This editorial comparison method sets no universal limit and does not replace verification of legal or contractual requirements for the activity. For a discrepancy, keep the client's original request and the explanation received; do not change a certificate to fill the gap.

Keep the explanation with its document version

File the certificate with the conditions and explanations used to interpret it. Before reusing the folder for another year or project, review validity, service provider and work performed. An old snapshot may no longer match the request.

For an RMACHADO supplementary-cover quote, describe your activity and what existing documents leave unresolved. Compare any proposal with current insurance; two certificates alone do not establish additive limits or protection for every claim.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Check the policy year and reference.
  • Identify who provides the service.
  • Obtain general, special and particular conditions.
  • Match client requirements to clauses and keep explanations.
