A short circuit without fire: which home or building insurance benefit should you check?

An electrical board is damaged and some equipment stops working, but there has been no fire. The label fire insurance does not explain that situation on its own. When preparing a report, distinguish the effects of electrical current, the affected items and the cover actually purchased.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Electrical damage requires checking the electrical risks benefit.
  • Internal breakdown, wear and effects of current are different descriptions.
  • Private equipment and shared installations may belong to different contracts.

A distinction visible in policy wording

The July 2025 Generali Multirrisco Casa wording excludes direct effects of current in equipment and installations, including short circuit, from mandatory fire cover. Its separate Electrical Risks condition addresses such damage even without fire, subject to its own exclusions. This is a contractual example: check the version and benefits in your policy.

Describe the items separately from the cause

List every affected item, its owner and location. Distinguish the building installation from household contents. In a condominium, identify shared property and items belonging to individual units without assuming that a single report resolves every situation.

Ask a technician to describe the fault observed, affected components and the cause established. Stopped working can describe different events. Do not insert an electrical cause simply to make the report match the name of a benefit.

Compare three scenarios before drawing a conclusion

An appliance failing through use, a circuit board affected by electrical current and property damaged by a subsequent fire should not be presented as identical events. Describe each scenario and request the relevant benefit, exclusions and required documents.

Fictional example: the condominium submits a gate repair bill while a resident reports damage to an appliance inside their home. Organise the two items, two owners and any technical connection between the events. Occurring on the same afternoon does not itself establish a common cause or insurance cover.

Retain evidence without creating additional danger

Prioritise safety and leave electrical interventions to qualified professionals. Record the incident and request instructions about inspections, retaining equipment or parts and repairs. Keep photographs taken safely, available purchase records and the diagnosis; confirm the procedure before disposing of items.

When requesting a quotation from RMACHADO, describe the building, contents and shared equipment you want to protect. Ask about electrical risks limits and excesses and the distinction from internal breakdown. The insurer’s assessment still depends on the facts and contract even when all requested documents have been supplied.
