THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Define protection or savings.
- Read the insured event.
- Check any maturity benefit.
Read the event that triggers payment
ASF’s glossary distinguishes temporary life cover, paying on death during the insured term, from mixed life insurance that also provides a survival benefit at the end. For pure-risk cover, monthly premium payments do not establish that savings or a surrender value exist.

Protection can serve its purpose without a claim
Fictional example: Sara wants a benefit during the ten years when she expects a family commitment to continue. She compares temporary protection with a savings product. If no insured event occurs, the first option’s lack of an end payment should reflect a feature she understood, rather than a late surprise.
Compare against the intended purpose
Locate the death benefit, any survival payment, term and any surrender values separately. Adding premiums together does not create a balance absent from the contract. Use RMACHADO GROUP’s life insurance guide to organise a protection request; for savings, also establish investment risks, costs and the conditions for leaving early.
