Mould on the wall: is having Water Damage cover enough?

There are stains on the wall and a quotation mentions damp treatment. Before assuming the insurer will pay, establish the cause and relevant policy condition. A benefit called Water Damage does not make every sign of damp the same insured event.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Mould and stains describe effects rather than establishing a cause.
  • Wording can distinguish damp and infiltration from water-system damage.
  • Read entire exclusions and exceptions and retain evidence.

Start with what was observed

Record where the stains appeared, when they were noticed and how they developed. Keep photographs from different dates separate and identify any specific event, such as an observed leak. A damp wall alone does not identify the installation, building element or phenomenon involved.

Ask the technician to distinguish verified findings from remaining hypotheses. A quotation saying only 'painting and mould treatment' describes work but may not explain the cause the insurer needs to assess.

An example where wording matters

Under Allianz Casa 2050 conditions, edition 02/2022_1, Water Damage excludes specified infiltration, damp and condensation damage, with an exception for damage directly resulting from blockage or overflow of the internal water-distribution and drainage network.

This is an example from that contract and needs the whole clause plus the conditions applicable to the policy. It is not a refusal rule for all insurance. A photograph alone does not establish either the exclusion or its exception.

Separate the cause, repairs and consequences

Create three lines: work needed to resolve the cause, repairs to damaged elements and finishing work. Identify the property and location for each. This avoids presenting different issues as a single expense requiring one answer.

Fictional example: a quotation includes replacing a connection, repairing a surface and painting two rooms. Before discussing the total, ask for each task to be itemised and related to the technical findings. The example does not establish that any expense is covered.

Report facts without inventing a cause

Follow claim instructions and retain photographs, reports and receipts. Where urgent safety or containment measures are needed, record what was done and why; collecting evidence does not justify leaving a dangerous situation in place.

If a response relies on an exclusion, request the condition reference and explanation relating the findings to that wording. RMACHADO can help organise home-insurance documents. This guide replaces neither the technical diagnosis nor the insurer's decision.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Record dates, locations and changes in the stains.
  • Separate observations, hypotheses and technical findings.
  • Read Water Damage wording with all exceptions.
  • Itemise cause-related work, damage and finishing.
  • Retain the claim reference and reasons received.
