Practical guide · Baggage and responsibility for custody

Checked in or in your care: is the baggage cover the same?

Do not assume identical protection just because a proposal mentions “baggage”. Identify who was responsible for the bag when the event occurred and which benefit was purchased. The same bag can pass through different situations during a trip; travelling on the same aircraft does not settle the insurance definition.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify who had custody of the bag at each stage.
  • Compare the purchased benefits and their exclusions.
  • Keep carrier and insurer case references separate.

A distinction found in the policy information

In the December 2025 Fidelidade Viagem information, benefit 17 concerns baggage entrusted to a carrier; benefit 36 concerns belongings in the traveller’s care for defined events. These are that document’s rules, not a universal definition for all insurance.

Under the first benefit, a claim to the carrier precedes the insurer’s supplementary payment. Check the applicable clause and amounts already paid. The example illustrates why two references to baggage should not be treated as equivalent.

Inês records changes in responsibility

Fictional Bairro Seguro example: Inês Lobo hands over a suitcase at the desk and keeps her backpack. Later she collects the suitcase and travels to her accommodation. Clara Mota asks her to draw those three stages and mark who had custody of each item.

For Inês, replacing clothes during the trip could use up her reserve for the remaining days. She wants clarification before making purchases in expectation of reimbursement. Listing the stages helps her ask a precise question without turning a damaged bag into a promise of payment.

What to ask before departure

Ask to see the baggage benefits included in the contract, the events specified, excluded belongings, limits and excesses. Compare two examples: damage while the carrier has the bag, and damage after you collect it.

Also ask what to do if delivery is merely delayed: a temporarily missing bag and a permanently lost one should not be reported as the same fact. Compare the procedure, documents and expenses requiring assessment without assuming an automatic amount.

If an incident occurs

Record the chronology, handover and collection references, communications received and observed damage. Seek instructions through the channels in the documents and retain supporting records. Distinguish claims to the carrier from claims to the insurer, and report relevant developments.

Do not post boarding passes or baggage labels containing identifiers in comments. To prepare protection before another trip, select Viagem in “Request a quote” on the RMACHADO website. If you already have a policy and need help with an occurrence, use Policy and claims support. A new proposal does not retrospectively resolve known damage.
