THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Check whether there is one booking or independent contracts.
- Distinguish a new ticket, accommodation and waiting expenses.
- Read the event, benefit and requirements for each cover.
The booking matters before invoking connection rights
Your Europe describes connecting flights in its dedicated section as part of a single reservation. Spanish consumer ministry guidance on independent bookings explains that the first airline does not automatically have to refund the missed second ticket. Rights concerning the first flight and, where applicable, other provable losses may remain; do not conclude that separate tickets remove every right.
In the exercise, Inês shows Clara the two purchase confirmations. Her question to the airline identifies the affected flight and its contract. Her question to the insurer presents the full route and the independent bookings. Writing an itinerary on one sheet does not turn two purchases into a single reservation.

The missed connection clause may pay for the wait
Generali Travel terms, form 889.021, clause 2.3 provides a nearby hotel and transport to it: at least two hours between flights, waiting for the next flight to the same destination on another day, and no airline intervention under applicable rules. It does not promise another ticket. Purchase and the remaining terms still need checking; this interval is not advice on sufficient time at every airport.
Clara returns to Inês’s question: sleeping near the airport is a different cost from continuing the journey. A benefit’s heading should not be read as a list of every consequence that will be paid. This example’s requirements are not rules shared by every policy.
Missing the second flight differs from cancelling before departure
In the same document, clause 2.1 addresses cancellation before the journey begins, for defined reasons.
In the story, the second flight operated; Inês was unable to board it. Clara retains that description in the request instead of writing that the airline cancelled the flight. If Inês decides to abandon the remaining route, that decision and its reason require their own assessment. A booking becoming unusable does not establish that an event specified in cancellation cover occurred.
To organise the costs, Inês creates separate lines for the unused ticket, a possible change or new purchase, the hotel and other expenses. For each line, she records the supplier’s response and what has been refunded or remains pending. This calculation locates the question; it does not calculate an insurance payment.
Before buying an alternative, request an answer for this route
Clara suggests a precise policy question: “With these two independent bookings, is missing the second flight because the first was late an event addressed by the policy? Which benefit is being assessed: hotel, transport to it, a change or a new ticket?” Ask for the clause and the option purchased. The cited missed connection passage does not expressly address separate bookings; this guide neither confirms inclusion nor invents an exclusion.
Keep scheduled and actual times, evidence of the cause reported by the airline, ticket terms and responses received. Before committing to extraordinary expenses, consult your policy’s procedure and assistance contact. Keep the airline request and insurance notification identified, including amounts already received. Do not post boarding passes or booking references in comments.
