Cargo stays in an intermediate warehouse: is it still in transit for insurance?

Goods have left the supplier but have not reached the customer. They may pass through a terminal, change vehicles or be held for later distribution. Calling a warehouse intermediate does not determine whether insurance considers the journey ongoing. Present the actual sequence.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Separate normal transit stops from independent storage.
  • Unloading purpose may matter as well as duration.
  • Do not transfer a time allowance from another transport condition.

A transit clause specifies starting and ending events

Fidelidade Mercadorias Transportadas CG036, September 2026, CE1 sets transit commencement and termination rules and distinguishes storage outside the normal course of transit. Different special conditions appear in the document; a time allowance in one should not be applied to the others. Identify the wording actually purchased.

Map one row per stage

As a preparation method, record origin, destination, transport modes and every unloading location. For each stop, note who decides it, its purpose and expected duration. Clarify whether goods are waiting only for onward movement or becoming stock available for allocation or distribution.

Ask for the quotation to be checked against that map. A reply should identify the transit condition and treatment of each phase rather than merely repeat warehouse-to-warehouse. If a stay requires another solution, ask for that need to be explained before dispatch.

Compare two unloadings with different purposes

Fictional example: one operation transfers pallets through a terminal to another truck for the declared destination. Another unloads them at a centre to await future orders. Even if both stays last the same number of days, their purpose differs and should be described to the insurer.

The example establishes no stage's coverage. It frames the question: is the location part of the declared journey or has it become a storage destination? Do not assume that a calendar allowance alone preserves protection when changing the route or extending a stay.

Prepare a cargo insurance quote

Provide RMACHADO with the route, goods type and planned stays. For regular operations, describe usual variations too. For an existing event, preserve actual records and timings; do not reconstruct an idealised journey to make the account match the quotation.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS
