Goods in transit insurance: route, value and risks

GETTING STARTED

Three points to consider

  • Identify goods, values, origins, destinations and transport modes.
  • Confirm the start and end of cover, including loading and unloading.
  • Clarify packaging, temporary storage, limits and exclusions.

What goods are transported and who bears the risk?

Describe the nature, value, packaging, origin, destination and means of transport. Fragile, perishable and high-value goods need specific clarification.

Identify the buyer, seller and carrier, and when each party bears the risk. Carrier liability and insurance for the goods serve different purposes.

From the departure warehouse to the destination

Check when cover begins and ends. Loading, unloading, transshipment and temporary storage should not be assumed included.

Where there are several legs, explain the complete operation. Compare covered risks, excesses, per-shipment limits and packing or surveillance requirements.

Example: equipment delivered damaged

When receiving damaged equipment, record its condition, reservations on the delivery document and available evidence. Follow the policy procedure and deadlines. The goods’ value, the damage and each party’s liability are separate elements in the assessment.

A question to clarify before deciding

Does the quotation cover every stage and insured interest identified in the transport?

The product examples mentioned in the frequently asked questions illustrate possible differences. They are not an offer from RMACHADO and do not show that a particular cover is included in your policy. Availability, acceptance and terms must be confirmed in the specific quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the carrier’s insurance guarantee the full value of the goods?

Do not assume equivalence. Assess the carrier’s liability and specific protection for the goods.

Can I protect just one shipment?

Request an assessment of the specific operation. The arrangement may depend on frequency, route, goods and acceptance terms.

Can a journey involving a lorry and a ship be assessed together?

Lusitania’s information includes multimodal transport. Describe every stage and confirm the quotation’s scope.

Are cargo and freight necessarily the same insured interest?

The offer distinguishes cargo, freight charges and other expenses. Identify what you want to insure.

Do regular shipments always require a policy for each journey?

Lusitania’s information presents open policies with declarations and other arrangements. Compare the arrangement with actual shipment frequency.

THE NEXT STEP

A review starts with your details.

Prepare the request, check the summary and submit it when correct. A record is created only after final submission; the request does not activate insurance.
