Truck, ship, then truck: describing the route to cargo insurance

An order leaves the warehouse by road, boards a ship and continues by truck to the customer. If the insurance request mentions only sea transport, how are the other stages described? Start with the complete route.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • List every known mode, stage and participant.
  • Check the contract's start and end of cover.
  • A final destination alone does not establish continuous cover.

Several modes do not mean one automatic answer

Fidelidade presents cargo insurance for different transport modes. Article 6 of its public September 2026 general terms addresses the contract's start and duration, including transit boundaries and route deviations or transfers. This is a contractual example; check the version applicable to the proposal.

Use that structure to request an answer for each stage instead of assuming «goods in transit» insures any route.

Build a five-field route map

For each segment, record origin, destination, mode, participant and expected period. Add transfer and storage locations. State when a carrier is not yet known; an identified gap is more useful than an assumed name.

Fictional example: road departure from Braga, terminal waiting, sea passage, unloading and road delivery. The business lists all five stages and asks where it bears commercial risk and which stages insurance includes. This does not determine responsibility in a particular sale.

Ask about each boundary

Check the operation that starts cover and the one ending it. Ask about transfers, intermediate stays, carrier changes and delivery to another warehouse. A vessel's arrival should not be confused with delivery where the sale agreement sets a different point.

Keep the sale, carriage and insurance contracts separate. Clarify who bears the risk at each stage before asserting the insurer is responsible.

Keep changes and evidence

Communicate route changes and request confirmation of their insurance treatment. Keep dispatch instructions, delivery evidence and replies with dates and shipment references.

Request a quote from RMACHADO with the route, goods and values for consideration. Cover depends on the modes, risks, limits and terms contracted.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Map the whole route and transport modes.
  • Identify transfers, storage and participants.
  • Check each stage's start, end and conditions.
  • Report changes and retain confirmation.
