Practical guide · Disruption during a holiday

Returning halfway through your holiday: are the ticket and unused nights the same cover?

An unexpected situation raises the prospect of returning before the planned date. There are at least two accounts: transport home and prepaid services left unused. A solution for one does not automatically establish how the other is treated under travel insurance.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Separate the cost of returning from unused reservations.
  • The event and family relationship may have specific definitions.
  • Record supplier refunds without duplicating expenses.

One example of separate benefits

Fidelidade Viagem's December 2025 information treats early return for certain family events separately from cancellation or interruption. The latter appears as an option and concerns paid expenses not refunded by the supplier, subject to defined events. This illustrates why transport and lost reservations require separate questions; it does not establish the chosen plan.

Prepare two accounts before adding figures

First list the original ticket, proposed change and additional cost quoted. Then list unused accommodation, activities and other services with refund policies. Record amounts already recovered or which suppliers agree to refund.

Fictional exercise: a flight change costs EUR 180 and unused accommodation totals EUR 420. If the hotel agrees to refund EUR 120, EUR 300 of that reservation remains to be clarified. Adding the figures is not an indemnity calculation: each item still needs the applicable cover and assessment.

Request instructions with the full context

Keep the assistance contact, policy reference, itinerary and reservations accessible. Explain the reason, event date, current location and available transport alternatives. Where possible, ask before making exceptional bookings and record the instructions received.

If urgency requires immediate decisions, retain evidence and explain the sequence. Contact records and invoices help document a case; they do not make an expense eligible. Emergency assistance and urgent clinical needs should not wait for administrative comparisons.

Before your next departure, test both questions

When reviewing the proposal, first ask who arranges or funds return travel for each specified event. Then ask about prepaid, unrecoverable reservations. Compare people, reasons, limits and procedures and identify answers missing from the documents.

RMACHADO can prepare a travel quote around the itinerary and these needs. Do not treat a generic cancellation answer as cover for every disruption during a holiday or one product example as a promise under another contract.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Separate return travel from unused services.
  • Check the selected option and defined event.
  • Ask suppliers what can be recovered.
  • Keep instructions, reservations and expense evidence.
