THE ESSENTIALS
Before you start
- Damage caused by and injury suffered by the dog are different questions.
- The connection to hunting matters when reading liability cover.
- A hunting benefit does not establish everyday animal protection.
What a specific example shows
In its CA Caçadores public questions, Crédito Agrícola states that liability includes animals serving the insured and used as hunting aids, as well as the insured and beaters working exclusively for them. This description belongs to that product; check the wording applicable to your contract.
Describe the context without deciding liability
For a clarification request, record who kept and used the animal, what activity was underway and what happened. Separate direct observations from information received from others. Where there is damage or danger, safety and appropriate assistance come first.
Fictional example: a hunter wants to understand liability for damage caused by a dog during an outing. Before relying on a line labelled 'insured dogs', they ask about liability and the activity's scope. Cover for injury to the animal does not answer that question.
Make a separate check outside hunting
Daily walks, keeping the animal at home and using it in hunting are different descriptions. Ask about each relevant policy, for example hunting liability and any animal or family liability protection. Two documents do not establish automatic addition of limits or allow a free choice of which insurer pays.
Where animal-specific legal requirements exist, verify them with the competent authority and request assessment of the relevant insurance. This article does not classify a dog, determine a keeper's liability or declare an insurance obligation fulfilled.
Use the correct review and claims channels
Before purchase, identify actual use and request definitions, limits and exclusions. After an incident, follow the claims process and supply requested information through the appropriate channel; buying or amending insurance does not confirm protection for earlier events.
You can request a RMACHADO hunting-liability simulation and explain that the enquiry concerns animals used in hunting. Do not publish injured parties' names, injury images, weapon documents or licences. Liability and cover require assessment of the specific case.
KEEP THESE QUESTIONS
Your checklist for the next conversation
- Identify whether damage was caused by or suffered by the animal.
- Describe the activity and the dog's relationship to the insured.
- Check hunting liability and any protection outside hunting.
- Keep documents and report facts through appropriate channels.
