Capital guaranteed: on which date and under which conditions?

Guaranteed does not answer everything: read what is guaranteed, in what proportion, when and under which conditions. For insurance-based investment products marketed in Portugal, early-exit information deserves separate attention. This article organises financial-literacy questions; it does not recommend investing or surrendering a contract.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Identify the product, option and current document.
  • Read the guarantee’s date and basis.
  • Clarify early exit and loss risk.

Turn the guarantee into a complete question

Before comparing products, locate the document for the actual option and its date. Write the full question: which capital is considered, when does the guarantee apply and what happens if I leave earlier? Do not transfer terms between options with similar names.

Fictional example: Helena sees protection in a document and assumes she can withdraw exactly everything paid in on any day. Instead of deciding from the heading, she reads risk, cost and early-exit sections. She neither selects a product nor requests surrender while the distinction between the stated guarantee and today’s available amount remains unclear.

Read timing together with early exit

The Fidelidade Savings Protection Option KID dated 27 January 2026 describes a guarantee of 90% of invested capital at each objective’s end and warns of no guarantee on early exit under the conditions stated. This example shows why both the percentage and the date matter; it is not a feature shared by every product or option.

Use the example only to frame questions for the distributor: which clause applies to my product, and how would the amount be calculated on another date? Ask about remaining risk. Do not treat a risk indicator, illustration or product name as a promise that losses cannot occur. An explanation should identify its actual contractual basis.

Ask about net value without mixing concepts

Separate amounts paid in, the current value displayed and the net amount of any surrender. Ask which costs, charges or personal tax implications need consideration. Do not estimate your own result from an illustrative table or treat somebody else’s experience as confirmation.

Ask for any estimate to identify its date, assumptions and factors depending on the execution date. An informational answer is not an instruction to surrender. Keep its reference and mark open questions, including whether suitable professional advice is needed for tax or other matters beyond explaining the contract. Do not make a transaction simply to test an estimate.

Obtain clarification before deciding

For information about these solutions in Portugal, read the Financial Life guide on rmachado.group and select Vida Financeiros in the request. Explain the clarification sought without giving investment or payment instructions in public comments. Product suitability requires its own assessment; this article neither compares returns, recommends a portfolio nor promises capital or income in your circumstances.
