Who is the key person's life insurance intended to protect?

In a small business, one person may hold important client relationships, technical knowledge and decision-making responsibilities. When discussing life insurance, separate two purposes: supporting the family and addressing a business need. One purpose should not be assumed simply because a policy already covers the same individual.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Define the purpose before the amount.
  • Separate business and family needs.
  • Document the business estimate.

Life cover can address different purposes

Zurich describes Proteção Plena Zurich as risk life insurance intended for family protection or key person protection. That reference helps frame an enquiry, but it does not determine the amount, beneficiary or acceptance of an individual case. Those elements need to be established in the actual proposal being considered.

Describe the dependency before choosing a figure

Fictional example: a workshop has two partners, but only one manages certain technical projects. They record which responsibilities would need transferring and which costs require estimates for finding and preparing a replacement. They are not placing a price on a person or predicting an insurance payment. They are building an explanation of the business need that someone else can examine. Their list separates documented costs, estimates and items without quotations, so the insurance discussion does not begin with an arbitrary amount.

Keep the two intended recipients separate

Prepare one note for the business and another for the family. For each, state the problem you want to address, the period under consideration and who should receive the contractual benefit. Ask how the proposed structure matches those purposes. Avoid adding benefits from existing policies without checking their recipients and objectives. Accounting or tax questions should be examined with the relevant professionals using the actual documents; a product name is not evidence of a financial advantage. Keep the two notes together so that overlaps remain visible during the review.

Bring the business need into the life review

Use the life insurance guide to request a key person assessment from RMACHADO GROUP. A clear description of responsibilities and purpose provides a useful basis for preparing the quotation.
