Medical repatriation: who chooses the return transport?

After an accident or illness abroad, relatives may want to arrange an immediate return to Portugal. Medically required transport should not be confused with buying a ticket because someone prefers to be home. Assistance follows a procedure and criteria set out in the policy.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • The need for transport and the means used require their own assessment.
  • The treating doctor and the assistance medical team have different roles.
  • Booking transport yourself does not establish that insurance will pay.

What a specific policy says

Fidelidade Viagem's December 2025 pre-contract information provides for prior review by the insurer's medical team in contact with the treating doctor for medical repatriation or transport. The insurer's medical team chooses the transport.

The document distinguishes an air ambulance where urgency and severity require it from other appropriate means. This is a policy example: check the conditions of your option and the assistance applicable to your trip.

Separate three questions

First, what urgent care is needed locally? Next, is an assisted transfer or return medically indicated and within the relevant arrangement? Finally, which transport and organisation have actually been confirmed? Wanting to be close to home does not answer all three.

In an emergency use local rescue and healthcare services. Insurance administration should not delay urgent help. This article does not assess symptoms or decide whether someone is fit to travel.

Avoid a booking based on an assumption

Fictional example: Sofia's relatives find a commercial flight for the next day while she remains under assessment abroad. Before buying it as though cover had already been confirmed, they ask assistance how clinical contact and the transport decision will be handled.

Keep the case reference and the answer specifying who arranges travel, its destination and what was agreed. Acknowledgement of a call does not authorise every expense the family later chooses.

Prepare the contact before departure

Keep the policy's assistance contact, insurance reference and basic trip details accessible. Agree with a companion where to find this information without circulating medical records in messaging groups.

For an RMACHADO travel insurance quote, identify the destination, dates and people to include, and ask how assistance operates. Check companions and other expenses separately: an answer about transporting the insured person does not automatically settle every family need.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Keep the policy's assistance contact.
  • Separate urgent local care from return transport.
  • Ask who assesses and chooses transport.
  • Clarify arrangements before assuming reimbursement.
  • Separate the insured person's and companions' needs.
