Practical guide · Preparing the cargo

Packaging appears on the transport bill: why clarify who packed and stowed the cargo?

The invoice includes packaging and the box leaves sealed. This does not explain preparation, who performed it or container stowage. Identifying those phases helps read transport-insurance terms and document an occurrence without deciding its cause in advance.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • A packaging invoice does not demonstrate technical suitability.
  • Identify who prepared the goods and who stowed the container.
  • Observed damage is not already a proven cause.

A contractual example explaining why this matters

Article 4(k) of Fidelidade's September 2026 CG036 excludes deficient, insufficient or unsuitable packing or preparation for normal journey incidents where performed by the policyholder, insured or their employees. Packing includes container stowage. This specific reference must be read with the applicable special conditions before determining an occurrence's effect.

Describe operations, not just the box supplier

Identify who packs the item, closes packaging, places and secures it in transport and handles container changes where relevant. Record what each document establishes. Knowing the invoicing company does not show that it carried out every phase.

Fictional example: a manufacturer buys boxes, packs parts at its factory and hands them over for container loading. The insurance enquiry distinguishes these operations. Buying a box is not presented as evidence of a complete professional packing service or insurer acceptance.

Keep evidence explaining preparation

Gather available item-handling instructions, packing references, relevant photographs and handover documents. Seek competent help on materials and securing methods; this guide neither designs packaging nor approves stowage.

After damage, preserve information on the observed exterior and interior condition and known journey stages. Do not reconstruct traces or dispose of relevant items before obtaining guidance where safe preservation is possible. Damaged packaging alone does not establish responsibility.

Compare proposals with the operational chain visible

Request assessment of the described goods, transport means and preparation responsibilities. For an exclusion, ask for its reference and scope requiring clarification. An all-risks label does not replace reading those conditions.

RMACHADO can help prepare a transport quote using this organised information. Technical suitability and each participant's responsibility require separate assessment. An enquiry confirms no claim payment and changes no reporting duties under an existing contract.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Identify packing and stowage stages.
  • Match each stage to the known participant.
  • Keep instructions, records and handover evidence.
  • Read general exclusions and shipment-specific terms.
