Travelling while pregnant: what to ask about cancellation and assistance

Sofia Lobo is preparing a trip and takes her pregnancy-related insurance questions to Clara Mota. In this fictional story, they first separate the cost of cancelling a booking from assistance that may be needed while travelling. An answer about one situation does not automatically settle the others.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Check cancellation and assistance separately.
  • Request the complete rule for the period and scenario described.
  • Insurance assessment does not replace clinical assessment of travel.

A specific-terms example

The December 2025 Fidelidade Viagem pre-contractual information, provided by CGD and reread on 30 October 2026, treats cancellation and medical expenses as separate benefits. It includes pregnancy-complication exclusions with conditions concerning gestational stage and awareness at purchase.

This is an example of policy wording, not a recommendation or a rule for all insurance. Clara asks for the complete benefit, conditions and exclusions in the actual proposal; a cancellation answer is not reused as confirmation of assistance.

Organise questions by trip stage

Before departure, ask which cancellation reason can be considered and which expenses need evidence. During travel, ask about assistance procedures, limits and any early return. Keep those answers separate.

Fictional example: Sofia and Clara open two folders. One holds booking terms and amounts that could be recovered; the other holds answers about help at the destination. An unexpected cost can strain a family budget, but that need does not establish an insurance entitlement. The example does not predict a complication or confirm cover.

Read the full clause in context

Request the cover, conditions and exclusions for the stated scenario, including insurance-purchase and planned travel dates. If clinical information is needed, confirm the appropriate way to provide it.

Do not reduce a reply to «pregnant travellers included» or «excluded». Retain the wording and proposal reference so its scenario remains clear.

Record the dates of each trip stage and ask what information is needed to assess assistance, complications, delivery or a newborn when those questions are relevant. These are questions for the actual contract, not statements that those situations are covered. Health information belongs only in the appropriate channel, never public comments.

Keep other decisions separate

Discuss fitness to travel with the clinician following the pregnancy. Confirm boarding or transport conditions with the provider. An insurance policy does not decide those matters.

Start a quote with RMACHADO by stating destination, dates and protection to clarify. Use the appropriate channel for health information; initial questions need not expose medical documents.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Separate cancellation, assistance and interruption.
  • Confirm the clause for the dates and scenario.
  • Keep terms, exclusions and replies.
  • Address clinical and transport decisions with the relevant professionals.
