Started making bicycle deliveries: does leisure insurance cover the working use?

The same bicycle can be used for Sunday rides and weekday deliveries. Identical equipment does not demonstrate that insurance was arranged for both uses. Start the review with the actual activity and the people and losses you want to protect.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Disclose delivery use explicitly.
  • An assistance condition does not define every other cover.
  • Worker protection and bicycle insurance require separate questions.

An example with a defined leisure scope

The MAPFRE Auto — Bicicleta insurance product information document, identified as 01062022, targets non-professional cyclists using bicycles for leisure. Its travel assistance excludes economic uses, including deliveries and carrying messages or people. This example concerns that product and cover.

It does not establish that every policy has the same exclusions, or that protection obtained through a platform meets every need. Professional use must be assessed under the specific proposal.

Describe the routine before requesting a price

Prepare a short description: bicycle type, electric assistance, ownership or use by other people, paid activity, approximate frequency and territory. Identify multiple uses rather than selecting only the simplest description.

Fictional example: someone starts making deliveries two evenings a week. When reviewing insurance, they explain that use and request confirmation of the proposed work and leisure protection. They do not select 'leisure rides' merely because they still cycle on days off.

Map the different needs

Organise the comparison around four questions: damage caused to third parties, injuries to the person working, bicycle damage or theft, and assistance following immobilisation. Add goods carried if that risk needs clarification. Cover under one heading does not answer the others.

If work-related or platform insurance is mentioned, request documents identifying who is covered, during which periods and for which activity. Employment-status and occupational-accident insurance questions require separate clarification; the label 'bicycle insurance' does not resolve them.

When the activity changes after purchase

Tell the intermediary or insurer about the new use and ask for a response identifying the assessment and applicable documents. Sending a message does not itself confirm acceptance of an amendment. Keep the response with the current contract version.

You can request a RMACHADO simulation under Bicicletas/Ciclo and explain that you use the vehicle for deliveries. Employment documents and personal data should use the appropriate channel indicated. This guide does not confirm acceptance, legal vehicle classification or cover for an accident.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Describe deliveries and other actual uses.
  • Identify the vehicle, users and territory.
  • Compare liability, injuries, bicycle protection and assistance separately.
  • Obtain documentary confirmation of amendments.
