Explained guide · Preparing the route

Are a boat's authorised navigation zone and insurance territory the same?

The insurance mentions Portugal and the planned trip involves different waters and ports. That statement alone does not settle two questions: where the vessel may legally navigate and where each benefit may operate. Compare the documents with the complete route rather than using either one to expand the other.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Authorised navigation and insurance territory require separate checks.
  • One benefit's territory does not establish the scope of every other benefit.
  • The route should include departures, destinations and stops.

What the order says about compulsory insurance

Paragraphs 3 and 4 of Order 689/2001 describe national territory, including Portugal's exclusive economic zone, territorial sea and inland waters, for compulsory liability insurance. They also require contracts to take account of authorised navigation zones recorded in the vessel's registration.

These provisions do not turn a policy's geographical scope into navigation authorisation. Nor do they automatically describe hull damage, belongings or assistance, which require separate examination.

Make two checks for the same route

First compare the itinerary with the vessel's documents and clarify restrictions with the competent authority. Then use that same itinerary for the insurance enquiry. Avoid describing the trip solely by the destination port's country.

Fictional example: the plan includes a Portuguese port and a stop abroad. The person preparing the file does not write only 'Portugal' because that is the departure point. They identify the stop and request an answer covering the intended locations. The example validates neither the route nor navigation conditions.

One column per benefit avoids an overbroad answer

Create separate comparison columns for the liability, hull and assistance benefits you want assessed. For each, record the geographical provision found, unresolved questions and the response received. Leave an unanswered cell visibly unanswered.

If a proposal mentions an extension, ask it to identify the relevant benefit and when it takes effect. An answer about help for the boat should not be copied into the hull-damage indemnity column.

Prepare the enquiry with the route, not just registration

For a Boat quotation enquiry with RMACHADO, add the use, period and itinerary to the technical information requested through the appropriate channel. Identify changes since an earlier enquiry and retain the document versions assessed.

Before departure, separately confirm what the insurance accepted and what was verified for navigation. This guide organises those two checks; it confirms neither international cover, vessel fitness nor permission to make the journey.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Find the authorised navigation zone in the registration.
  • Describe the planned route and ports.
  • Check territory benefit by benefit, including assistance.
  • Confirm any extensions before departure.
