Boat wreck removal: is liability insurance enough?

Henrique Vasconcelos reviews his boat insurance and asks who would pay to remove wreckage after a loss. In this fictional story, Clara Mota looks beyond the liability sum insured and asks which benefit, expense and limit apply.

THE ESSENTIALS

Before you start

  • Do not infer wreck removal from simply having liability cover.
  • Find the specific benefit and expense limit.
  • Assistance, salvage and removal need separately identified answers.

The same policy can separate these expenses

In MAPFRE example 51020090100, compulsory liability condition CE07 excludes wreck or salvage removal expenses under Article 2(2)(c). Boat Damage condition CE01 provides wreck removal expenses up to the particular-conditions limit. This distinction belongs to that wording, rather than all insurance contracts.

A provision in a special condition does not establish that Henrique purchased it or that a specific expense is accepted. Clara asks for the policy version and the benefits actually selected. A prominent liability sum insured on the first page does not answer the question by itself.

The product table helps locate the question

The current product page lists compulsory liability, optional Boat Damage and a separate assistance section with recovery and towing. This organisation helps locate different benefits; it does not establish that recovery, towing and wreck removal are one benefit.

Henrique writes three separate requests: what removal expenses mean under the contract, which limit applies and what procedure he should follow to submit them. He avoids filling gaps with a package name. Comparison needs the actual proposal and is not a recommendation of this insurer.

Request an estimate describing the operation

Editorial method: identify the proposed operation, participants and estimate items when requesting clarification. Separate removal and the destination of the material from other expenses in the same document. Do not treat the overall total as automatically payable under insurance.

Fictional example: Henrique receives an estimate with one line for removing wreckage and another for a later service. Clara asks him to keep both lines identified and ask which are being assessed. The estimate records the contractor’s proposal; it is not the insurer’s decision to pay.

An actual incident needs its own process

If a loss has already occurred, use appropriate emergency services and follow competent-authority instructions to protect people. This guide does not direct a salvage operation, advise leaving wreckage in place or permit waiting for an administrative answer where danger exists.

To organise the case, keep incident references, instructions received, itemised estimates and insurer responses. Ask about the contractual procedure without assuming that authorisation from one participant means acceptance of every expense.

Reviewing future protection is a different task

Before another trip, Henrique can prepare a comparison using the boat details, intended use and his specific question about removal expenses. At RMACHADO, select Boat when requesting a quote. Do not publish documents or precise locations in social comments.

A future proposal neither resolves an earlier loss nor authorises navigation or works. Clara ends the conversation with four policy-reading points, leaving assessment of liability, conditions and amounts to the appropriate process.

KEEP THESE QUESTIONS

Your checklist for the next conversation

  • Find the wreck-removal benefit rather than inferring it from liability.
  • Check purchase of the benefit and its particular-conditions limit.
  • Separate the operations and estimate items.
  • Keep instructions and responses, with safety first.
